The Taiwan-Indonesia Environmental Change and Land Resource Management Research Center at National Taipei University was established in 2018 when it received a subsidy, as part of the New Southbound Policy, from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Research initially focussed on surveying and measurement technology, but is currently expending its boundaries towards sustainable development and natural disaster risk research. The center’s office in Indonesia is located at Al Azhar University Indonesia in Jakarta. The mission of the center is to provide and expand knowledge on land resource management and surveying techniques among academics, industry professionals, as well as students and young talents, in both Taiwan and Indonesia. In the year 2022 the Taiwan-Indonesia Research Center organised two online workshops on the subject of sustainability in the built environment.

Workshop ‘Disaster Risk, Urban Development and I9mplications for Real Estate’

The first workshop was conducted in May 2022 in collaboration with the department of Real Estate and Built Environment of National Taipei University and the Geography department of State University of Semarang (Universitas Negeri Semarang). This three week workshop for students of both universities commenced with lectures provided by associate professor Ku of NTPU titled: ‘Exploring the Complex Relationship between Disaster Risks and Urban Development in Taiwan’ and dr. Satya Budi Nugraha of UNNES on ‘Disaster Risk and Urban Development in Semarang’. The participants of the workshop consisted of students from both universities, who in the subsequent two weeks worked in interdisciplinary, transnational teams on a case study. On May 24th a total of five teams presented their cases with topics ranging from ‘Landslide risk mitigation in New Taipei City and Semarang’ to ‘Impact of sea level rise on urban development in Kaohsiung and Jakarta’. The workshop provided an excellent opportunity for students and faculty of both universities to interact and share knowledge of disaster risk in urban environments.

Meeting 1 workshop ‘Sustainable Real Estate and ESG in the Built Environment’: guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Sebastian from The Hague University of Applied Sciences
Meeting 2 workshop ‘Sustainable Real Estate and ESG in the Built Environment’: Forum with practitioners from the private sector

Workshop ‘Sustainable Real Estate and ESG in the Built Environment’

In the fall of 2022 the second workshop took place with a focus on sustainability in the real estate sector. This five week workshop started off with an introductory lecture on ‘Sustainable Real Estate’ by TIUL-researcher Chantalle Rietdijk, followed by a guest lecture by Professor Dr. Rizal Sebastian of The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands titled: ‘Future Urban Systems: An Inclusive Approach Towards Liveable, Climate-neutral, and Productive Smart Cities’ in the second week. This online lecture was attended by 61 participants from NTPU in Taiwan and Al Azhar University Indonesia in Jakarta. Week three consisted of a hybrid forum ‘Forum on Trends & Practices of ESG in Real Estate’. Four practitioners from the private sector were invited to share their knowledge and ideas on sustainable real estate with the participants of the workshop. We had the pleasure to have Joanna Tien of JGB Smart Property, Erin Ting of Savills Taiwan and Stan Ho of Greenjump Sustainability with us in person, while Richard Chang (International WELL Building Institute) joined us online. The forum was attended by 56 participants, in person and online participants in Taiwan and Indonesia combined.

Students of the Department of Real Estate and Built Environment and International College of Sustainability Innovations at NTPU worked on case studies in teams, which they presented in the final week. Topics included: Urban water management, the prospects of sustainable real estate in Taipei and Examples of governmental plans on Sustainable Urban Development.
